Management of science and research at the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA

In the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA to the area of science and research is continually given a high attention and support. The research and creative activities are coordinated and organized by the Department of Science and Research, headed by the Vice-Rector for Science and Research, by Professor Milada Krejčí, PhD. This department provides cooperation in the elaboration of projects of international, national and regional programs, regular evidence of scientific and research activities of academic staff in the information system, collects information about scientific conferences and professional seminars in the Czech Republic and abroad, and manages the evaluation of scientific and research outputs.

The Department of Science and Research is also involved in the ensuring of the academic staff's professional development and in the efficient transfer of research results into education process and in further development of science on the principle of Open Access. An important role in science and research management is given by the Scientific Council in the coordination of evaluation criteria and conceptual direction in the field of research and development, thereby enhancing the quality of scientific work and its competitiveness.

In the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA operates the "Society for Research in Wellness", which was established as an open platform for scientific and research cooperation, supporting quality research and spreading new scientific knowledge in the field of wellness. In particular, it helps to promote scientific research with a focus on the health and well-being of socially disadvantaged citizens, seniors and the persons with disability. The Society for Research in Wellness also supports and protects the publication of the scientific journal "Acta Salus Vitae" - ISSN 1805-8787 http://odborne.casopisy.palestra.cz/index.php/actasalusvitae and ensures about that the ethical principles of published research studies and in accordance with the protection of the environment.

The focus of the research and scientific activities is also based on the initiatives of the institutions with which the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA cooperates (clinical workplaces, centres of praxis, etc.). Students are involved in the research activities through the seminar work, bachelor's and master's theses. In this context, the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA concludes agreements about scientific and research cooperation with universities and institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad (e.g. cooperation with Casri in the Czech Republic, Kochi University in Japan, Matej Bel University in Slovakia, etc.).

Development of scientific and research cooperation

In the long-term development of science and research until 2020, the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA aims to further develop of effective collaboration with leading scientists and known professionals in the national and international context. With these experts are solved research intentions based on actual needs of society in terms of improving quality of life and health promotion. An important part of the strategic plan is also the integration of talented students into research and scientific work, thus achieving a high level of scientific communication with young prospective specialists in the fields of wellness, fitness, nutrition, and sports diagnostics.

The College of PE and Sport PALESTRA is open to offers and challenges of scientific bilateral cooperation within the framework of Wellness, Health, Quality of Life in the private and public spheres as part of a strategic plan for the development of science and research with the 2020 horizon and the orientation until 2030. The basis of the offer from the private sphere is the description of the research project and the draft contract for cooperation with the given company under the conditions stipulated by the law and scientific ethics.

    Peer-Review of Selected Outputs; Prestigious international cooperation; The planned strategic intent is expressed by bibliometric, i.e. by the quality of publication outputs; The plan is aimed at continuously improving of quality of the scientific journal "Acta Salus Vitae", on the quality of scientific publications of our specialists in scientific journals, including journals quoted in Web of Science and Scopus. Only such oriented science and research strategy opens to the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA opportunities for external financing of science and research, for participation in national and international projects, and not at least to obtain significant awards. The quality of the journals in which our specialists publish is more important to us than just the number of publications. In this respect, every academic has the opportunity to develop his own standards.
  • Social relevance of science and research outcomes.
    Priority Socially Relevant Areas of Science and Research of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA:

    Harmonization function of motion activities; diagnosis of mental states, analysis of breathing in motion sequences, and other monitoring of biofeedback load response; establishment of a training psychotherapy laboratory;

    Analyse of circadian habits and preferences; Adequate movement regime; comprehensive compensation schemes for athletes (from children to adults); special attention to the kinesis protection of the quality of life of seniors and persons with disabilities - accessibility, specifics; 

    Somatotypes of athletes in combination with body composition, establishment of the Anthropometric Laboratory;

    Analysis of the positive and negative effects of sport on individuals and society; alcohol and sports; sports education; Leisure time; re-socializing effects of sports activities.


Development of internationalization in science and research

The strategic goal is to support the professional development of academics and students of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA, mainly through international cooperation in science and research, active research mobility organization and international conferences in order to ensure the continuity of the individual work of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA at a high level.

In this context, particular attention is paid to the reciprocity of research internships. An example of such a well-established cooperation of academics and students based on bilateral agreements on scientific and research cooperation is the cooperation of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA with Kochi University - Japan, with the University School of PE and Sport Wroclaw - Poland, with the Department of PE and Sport, Faculty of Arts of Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica - Slovakia.

The planned strategic plan for science and research with the 2020 horizon is the conclusion of bilateral agreements with the US Department of Biological Science University of California, the Indian Workplace of Himachal Pradesh University Shimla, with SGT University Delhi and a selected Canadian workplace.

Science and Research Area Development Plan for 2017- 2018

  • To realise the internal evaluation of the workplaces on the basis of the recommended indicators for the evaluation of science and research at the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA. In particular, to motivate young academic staff and students to work in science and research; To find mechanisms for financial evaluation based on the quality of the work done, thus increasing the prestige of scientific work.
  • To promote excellence in research by expanding international cooperation, e.g. in the "Life Style Survey, circadian typology, sleep and meal habits and mental health of athletes" in the collaborations of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA with "Laboratory of Environmental Physiology, Dept. of Science Education, Kochi University, Japan, to complete the preparation of the project "Influence of yoga breathing on change of actual mental states" in the synagogue of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA with the workplace of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, SGT University Delhi - India.
  • To prepare and implement conferences and research internships at the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA.
  • To promote active participation in international conferences and research internships for academic staff and students of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA.
  • To update and continuously complete the plan for support of academic staff professional development within the 2020 horizon. To determine the research intentions of the individual workplaces of the College of PE and Sport PALESTRA with respect to conditions for doctoral, habilitation and professorial nomination.

Functional Diagnostic Laboratory:

Anthropometric Laboratory:
Fields of Research and Services - Determination of Proportionality of Selected Physical Parameters, Calculation of BMI - Categorization, Determination of Fat Part Distribution, Determination of Body Composition Components - Skeletal, Skeletal Muscle, Heath-Carter's determination of the somatotype method, determination of the weight of segments of the upper and lower limbs with and without the fat component, the assessment of the fitness of the body in relation to the selected sport and age, including the height prediction. Performing anthropometric examinations that are non-invasive, lasting about 15 minutes. Body height, weight, length, width and circumference dimensions and thickness of skin algae are measured. The measured data are evaluated by the ANTROPO computer program. Predicting and assessing the adequacy of the burden on an individual's body, especially in childhood and adolescence, and assessing the suitability of a physical structure to a particular type of sport can prevent a number of health problems, such as defeat, growth retardation, early closure of growth slots, etc.

Laboratory of Psycho-training:
Research and service areas - training psychotherapy and mental health support strategies for young athletes, coherence of circadian preference with symptoms of negative mental states of athletes, circadian preferences of athletes and non-sportsmen in the context of adherence to a healthy lifestyle. Self-regulation techniques in the training process, e.g. relaxation techniques, breathing control, etc. Research procedures using the tool “Biofeedback 2000x-pert Schuhfried”. Application in psychosomatic problems, anxiety disorders and stress management. Psychology of breathing and training of effective relaxation techniques. In the context of sleep hygiene and mental health support (states of irritation and depressive state), the Biofeedback 2000x-pert Schuhfried system is used with an outlook for education and prophylactic coaching practice.
